- Absolutely, a general dentist can provide any dental service and procedure that they feel comfortable performing. However, general dentists often focus on the more general issues and don't have the experience or training to perform tasks that are specific to treating pediatric patients. Typically a general dentist might treat a few patients in dental school, but often a dental student graduates dental school feel uncomfortable with treating pediatric patients.
How Does a Dentist Become a Pediatric Dental Specialist?
- All pediatric dentist attend dental school for four years in addition to receiving a bachelor's degree. After dental school they apply to pediatric dental training programs across the country. If they are accepted to a specialty training program, they then complete a two to three year training. Residents receive advanced clinical and didactic training making them the experts when it comes to oral health care for children.
Pediatric dentists are kid experts! They have specialized training in pediatric dentistry, they are experts at educating and treating children, and know how to communicate and connect with children.
